Your Septic Company / Septic tips
What not to flush or pour down the drain
Your septic tank works because of bacteria that break down waste. Anything that kills those bacteria, or doesn't break down at all, ends up costing you money.
Keep these out of the toilet
- "Flushable" wipes. They don't break down in a tank.
- Paper towels, tissues and feminine products
- Cat litter, cigarette butts and dental floss
- Medicines. Take them to a drop-off instead.
Go easy at the sink
- Grease and cooking oil harden and clog the lines.
- Bleach and harsh cleaners in large amounts kill the good bacteria.
- Coffee grounds and food scraps fill the tank faster, even with a disposal.
Spread out the water
Running five loads of laundry in one day pushes water through the tank before solids can settle. Spread laundry across the week and fix leaky toilets and faucets fast.
