Repair or replace? How to decide on an older appliance
When an older appliance breaks, the big question is whether it's worth fixing.
A simple rule
If the repair costs less than half the price of a new one, and the appliance is less than about two-thirds through its usual life, repair it.
Typical lifespans
- Refrigerators: 10 to 15 years
- Washers and dryers: 10 to 13 years
- Dishwashers: 9 to 12 years
- Ranges and ovens: 13 to 15 years
